“Terrestrial TV & Today’s Technology”

Television is one of the most successful forms of mass communication globally. In the recent decades, it has played a critical role as an efficient mass communication tool in the socialization and effective learning of the children.

The Earliest Broadcasting Technology

The first technology used for broadcasting television channels was the Terrestrial Television which is also known as over-the-air television. It is different from the modern broadcast technologies such as cable and satellite television. In this type of analog broadcasting, the television signals are transmitted via radio waves from an earth-based transmitter of the television station to an antenna located on the TV receiver.

Research & Development in the Television Broadcasting Field

Over the years, research & development has transformed the television industry by unearthing methods and techniques that enhanced the quality and content for the end users to a great extent. A series of technological evolutions has made it possible for the public to watch such high definition broadcasted channels.  One such technological progression in this industry is the Digital terrestrial television (DTTV or DTT). With the advent of Digital technology, multiplex transmitters could be used which allow it to receive multiple channels via a single frequency range only. Use of Digital Television provides improved picture quality with the elimination of the common issues faced in analog technology i.e. snowing and ghosting. It supports both standard definition television (SDTV) and high definition television (HDTV).

A Big Step towards Digitization

The European Union took a step towards digitization of the analog technology in December 2005, deciding to switch all terrestrial analog audio and video television broadcasting to digital television transmissions by 2012.

Digital Video Broadcasting Second Generation Version (DVB-T2)

To ensure a highly efficient use of the spectrum and the existing systems a new broadcasting technology known as the Second Generation Digital Video Broadcasting – (DVB-T2) was introduced. It ensures a better user experience as compared to the earlier technologies and is bandwidth efficient. The latest innovations, novel FEC techniques and the use of higher modulation schemes in the DVB-T2 technology have helped to attain higher data rates and produce signals that are more robust to interference that the first generation DTT standards. The enhanced multiplexing techniques can provide 50 Mbps overall throughput as compared to 32 Mbps in DVB-T.

Use of DVB-T set top box

To take advantage of this latest broadcasting technology, receiver devices are required at the end user so that it can receive the broadcasted digital signals and decode them via a standard antenna. Digital television set top box (dvb set top box) is one of the best devices for this purpose.  It is a simple device that is placed between the existing television and the antenna that decodes the broadcasted television signals into sound and videos compatible with your analog television.

Infomir is one of the digital set top box manufacturers that provide state of the art, high quality and durable IPTV/DVB-T set-top box such as the MAG256/257 at pretty affordable rates. It has fast and powerful media processor, USB 3.0 & USB 2.0 ports to external carriers, Wi-Fi adapters and TV cables (AV & HDMI)
